The group connected through a dating app. Evansville Police and other law enforcement agencies responded to a house on Stinson Avenue Tuesday night.
Following a deadly officer-involved shootingpolice discovered a man dead inside the home and a woman who was bound and badly beaten. According to the arrest affidavit obtained by 44News, the two victims were invited to the home by Heidi Carter. Carter has now been charged with a long list of crimes including murder and rape.
Carter connected with the female victim through a dating app. Carter then invited the victim and the victim's boyfriend over.
Carter admitted to police the three then did drugs, drank and engaged in sexual activity. According to the affidavit, that's when Carter's boyfriend came home and discovered the situation. The female victim tells investigators, Carter's boyfriend, Carey Hammond, became enraged and beat the couple with a baseball bat.
According to the affidavit, Hammond then raped the female victim and strangled the boyfriend, killing him. Investigators have determined that is when Carter called a friend over to help clean up, telling the woman the house needed to be prepared for a landlord inspection. During the cleaning process, the woman discovered the female victim begging for help and the body.

The friend then tried to leave but was threatened by Hammond. She did eventually escape and was the person who flagged down an Indiana State Trooper and alerted authorities to the situation. According to Evansville Police, Carter cooperated with officers on the scene.
EPD tells 44News, Hammond committed suicide by cop when he walked out of the home holding an item that had been shaped to look like a gun.
