He was born in Salinas, as family lore has it, in the long-gone Park Lane Hospital, waking to the world in a lettuce crate refashioned as a makeshift bassinet. In between, he lived a life of ferocious passions and loyalties.

As Snail guitarist Ken Kraft tells it, one of Mr. Hosford had landed a record deal. But to know Mr. Hosford only a musician is to know only a little about the man. But it gave little indication of Mr. Though he was not well-schooled, Mr. Hosford was a voracious reader and lover of books.

John Steinbeck, the most famous son of Salinas, was another area of fierce devotion. In the s, Mr. I would love to see Salinas name a library after him.

Talking to Mr. Hosford used to crack about Bryant — told the story of introducing Mr. Hosford to his brother-in-law who had devoted his career to trees. Those weekly shows, which between the two venues went on for a dozen years, had an anything-goes quality to them.

Central to the novel at the heart of Mr. Those close to him said he nursed a painful longing for Charlotte for many years until the two finally came together as a couple in late middle age. He died a few months later after a years-long battle with emphysema. Show Caption.
